A one-pot route to 2-alkyl and 2-aryl-4H-benzo[d][1,3]oxazin-4-ones (also known as 4H-3,1-benzoxazin-4-ones) has been developed and studied. The method involves the reaction of aryl-substituted anthranilic acids with orthoesters in ethanol catalyzed by acetic acid. Additionally, we have also investigated the reaction under microwave conditions. Not all of the substrates were successful in yielding the target heterocycles as some of the reactions failed to undergo the final elimination. This process led to the isolation of (+/-)-2-alkyl/aryl-2-ethoxy-1,2-dihydro-4H-benzo[d][1,3]oxazin-4-ones. The formation of the dihydro analogs correlated with the electron density on the aromatic ring: Electron-donating groups favored the 4H- benzo[d][1,3]oxazin-4-ones, while electron-withdrawing groups tended to favor the dihydro product. Substituting a pyridine ring for the benzene ring in the substrate acid suppressed the reaction.

A highly efficient and modular synthesis of nematode pheromone ascarosides was developed, which highlights a 4-step scalable synthesis of the common intermediate 10 in 23% yield from commercially available l-rhamnose by using orthoesterification/benzylation/orthoester rearrangement as the key step. Six diverse ascarosides were synthesized accordingly. Notably, biological investigations revealed that ascr#1 and ascr#18 treatment resulted in enhanced callose accumulation in Arabidopsis leaves. And ascr#18 also increased the expression of defense-related genes such as PR1, PDF1.2, LOX2 and AOS, which might contribute to the enhanced plant defense responses. This study not only allows a facile access to 1-O, 2-O, and 4-O substituted ascarosides, but also provides valuable insights into their biological activities in inducing plant defense response, as well as their mode of action.

Regioselectivity is a crucial issue in Baeyer-Villiger (BV) oxidation. To date, few reports have addressed asymmetric BV oxidation of 3-substituted cycloketones due to the high difficulty of controlling regio- and stereoselectivity. Herein, we report the asymmetric BV oxidation of 3-substituted and meso-disubstituted cycloketones with chiral N,N ‘-dioxide/Sc(iii) catalysts performed in three ways: classical kinetic resolution, parallel kinetic resolution and desymmetrization. The methodology was applied in the total and formal synthesis of bioactive compounds and natural products. Control experiments and calculations demonstrated that flexible and adjustable catalysts played a significant role in the chiral recognition of substrates.

The development of new techniques and materials that can separate ethylene from ethane is highly relevant in modern applications. Although adsorption-based separation techniques using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained increasing attention, the relatively low stability (especially water resistance) and unscalable synthesis of MOFs severely limit their application in real industrial scenarios. Addressing these challenges, we rationally designed and synthesized two new C2H6-selective MOF adsorbents (NKMOF-8-Br and -Me) with ultrahigh chemical and thermal stability, including water resistance. Attributed to the nonpolar/hydrophobic pore environments and appropriate pore apertures, the MOFs can capture C-2 hydrocarbon gases at ambient conditions even in high humidity. The single-crystal structures of gas@NKMOF-8 realized the direct visualization of adsorption sites of the gases. Both the single-crystal data and simulated data elucidate the mechanism of selective adsorption. Moreover, the NKMOF-8 possesses high C2H6 adsorption capacity and high selectivity, allowing for efficient C2H6/C2H4 separation, as verified by experimental breakthrough tests. Most importantly, NKMOF-8-Br and -Me can be scalably synthesized through stirring at room temperature in minutes, which confers them with great potential for industrial application. This work offers new adsorbents that can address major chemical industrial challenges and provides an in-depth understanding of the gas binding sites in a visual manner.

A ruthenium-catalyzed photoredox coupling of substituted N-aryltetrahydroisoquinolines (THIQs) and different bench-stable pyridinium salts was successfully developed to give fast access to 1-benzyl-THIQs. Furthermore, secondary alkyl and allyl groups were also successfully introduced via the same method. This strategy incorporates a radical acyl thiol-ene reaction as the key C-S bond forming step. Cyclization is achieved via a Steglich-type thiolactonization of 5-mercaptopentanoic acids. An inexpensive, mild, and highly efficient epoxidation protocol has been developed involving bubbling SO2F2 gas into a solution of olefin, 30% aqueous hydrogen peroxide, and 4 N aqueous potassium carbonate in 1,4-dioxane at room temperature for 1 h with the formation of the corresponding epoxides in good to excellent yields. This manuscript details the impact of stabilizing agents on the structural, optical properties of Ag@SnO2 core shell nanoparticles and its biological applications. Three different stabilizing agent viz. Poly Vinyl Pyrrolidone (PVP), zeroth generation triazolyl glycodendrimer and zeroth generation triazolyl chalcone dendrimer were used as stabilizers in the synthesis of Ag@SnO2 nanoparticles. The results were compared to study their effect on the structural and optical properties of the synthesized samples. The structural parameters of the samples were investigated by XRD analysis, FESEM and HRTEM images. The presence of SnO2 shell on the Ag core was also corroborated by XPS results. The XRD data was used for refining and characterizing the elements present in the sample by Reitveld method. The average crystallite size, dislocation density, lattice parameters (a, c), lattice strain of the samples were calculated using XRD measurements. Williamson – Hall (W-H) method and Size Strain Plot (SSP) method were used to calculate the lattice strain of the synthesized sample. The concentric rings of the SAED pattern and the lattice fringe images exhibited the interplanar d-spacing values and the results were compared with XRD measurements. The optical properties of the samples were investigated using UV-Vis spectra and the band gap energy were calculated using Tauc plot. The Photoluminescence (PL) studies of the Ag@SnO2 core – shell nanoparticles with the three stabilizing agents are also discussed in this work. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of the chalcone dendrimer stabilized Ag@SnO2 core – shell nanoparticles were tested against the pathogens Bacillus subtilis, Proteus mirabilis, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. Eight energetic salts with a gem-dinitro group based on 1,2,4-oxadiazole were developed. All of the structures were confirmed by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, H-1 and C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine the structures of the pivotal intermediate 3-(chlorodinitromethyl)-5-methyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole (3), the potassium salt (4) and the hydrazinium salt (7). All of them are insensitive to impact (>40 J) and have higher energy levels than trinitrotoluene (TNT).
