Efficient chemoselective transfer hydrogenation of the C=C bond of alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones has been developed, using the iridium complexes containing pyridine-imidazolidinyl ligands as catalysts and formic acid as a hydrogen source. In comparison with organic solvents or H2O as solvent, the mixed solvents of H2O and MeOH are critical for a high catalytic chemoselective transformation. This chemoselective transfer hydrogenation can be carried out in air, which is operationally simple, allowing a wide variety of alpha,beta-unsaturated substrates with different functional groups (electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents) leading to chemoselective transfer hydrogenation in excellent yields. The practical application of this protocol is demonstrated by a gram-scale transformation.

We describe herein an efficient protocol for the one-pot synthesis of 4-organylselanylpyrazoles by direct cyclocondensation and C-H bond selenylation reactions starting from hydrazines, 1,3-diketones and diorganyl diselenides promoted by Oxone (R). The products were obtained through a metal catalyst free methodology, under mild conditions, in short reaction times and moderate to excellent yields.

Chitosan microspheres modified by 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde were prepared and used in the construction of a heterogeneous catalyst loaded with nano-Cu prepared by a reduction reaction. The chemical structure of the catalyst was investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Under mild conditions, such as no ligand at room temperature, the catalyst was successfully applied to catalyze the borylation of alpha,beta-unsaturated receptors in a water-methanol medium, yielding 17%-100% of the corresponding beta-hydroxy product. Even after repeated use five times, the catalyst still exhibited excellent catalytic activity.

The synthesis of a series of novel 7-aminooxazolo[5,4-d]pyrimidines5, transformations during their synthesis and their physicochemical characteristics have been described. Complete detailed spectral analysis of the intermediates2-4, theN ‘-cyanooxazolylacetamidine by-products7and final compounds5has been carried out using MS, IR, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. Theoretical research was carried out to explain the privileged formation of 7-aminooxazolo[5,4-d]pyrimidines in relation to the possibility of their isomer formation and the related thermodynamic aspects. Additionally, the single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis for5hwas reported. Ten 7-aminooxazolo[5,4-d]pyrimidines5(SCM1-10) were biologically tested in vitro to preliminarily evaluate their immunological, antiviral and anticancer activity. CompoundsSCM5andSCM9showed the best immunoregulatory profile. The compounds displayed low-toxicity and strongly inhibited phytohemagglutinin A-induced proliferation of human peripheral blood lymphocytes and lipopolysaccharide-induced proliferation of mouse splenocytes. CompoundSCM9caused also a moderate suppression of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) production in a human whole blood culture. Of note, the compounds also inhibited the growth of selected tumor cell lines and inhibited replication of human herpes virus type-1 (HHV-1) virus in A-549 cell line. Molecular investigations showed that the compounds exerted differential changes in expression of signaling proteins in Jurkat and WEHI-231 cell lines. The activity ofSCM5is likely associated with elicitation of cell signaling pathways leading to cell apoptosis. The compounds may be of interest in terms of therapeutic utility as inhibitors of autoimmune disorders, virus replication and antitumor agents.

Plants have been used for thousands of years for various purposes because they have a wide variety of activities with biological significance. Mexican oregano is an aromatic plant of great importance to Mexico and north of Jalisco state as a spice with important economic value. Chromatographic identification and quantification of phenolic compounds and evaluation of their antioxidant activity were important tools to obtain a better characterization of this spice. Phytochemical analysis indicated the presence of flavonoids, triterpenes, saponins, quinones and tannins, the latter at high concentrations. Through chromatographic assays of Mexican oregano extracts, 62 compounds were identified, the major ones being quantified as: taxifolin, apigenin 7-O-glucoside, phlorizin, eriodictyol, quercetin, naringenin, hispidulin, pinocembrin, galangin and genkwanin (compound for the first time reported for this species). The results can be useful as a precedent to establish the bases of new quality characterization parameters and they have also suggested that Mexican oregano contains a wide variety of compounds with untapped importance for the development of new high value-added products.

Hydroboration of carbonyl compounds is an important transformation in organic chemistry, and a growing interest in catalysis has focused on abundant and nontoxic base metals. Herein we describe an efficient salen manganese catalyst for the hydroboration of a broad range of carbonyl compounds with pinacolborane. The catalytic reactions proceeded rapidly (>99% conversion in <5 min) at room temperature with very low catalyst loadings. High turnover frequency (up to 5700 h(-1)) was observed under these conditions. Several synthetically important functional groups were tolerated, and chemoselective hydroboration of aldehydes over ketones was achieved. The H/D kinetic isotopic effect of borane was determined to be 2.3. The Hammett correlation plot of a series of para-substituted acetophenone substrates, p-X-C6H6COCH3 (X = H, Me, OMe, NO2, Cl, Br, and CF3) yielded a positive slope of rho = +0.99. The crossover products were detected in the competition reaction of catecholborane and deuterated pinacolborane with acetophenone. The findings indicated a potential borane-mediated pathway that could account for the observation of the crossover products. The highly selective C = C reduction of alpha,beta-enones was realized by CF3SO3H-modifying noble-metal-free TiO2 photocatalysis. Selectivity for C = C over C = O reduction was dramatically reversed from fair (similar to 42% without CF3SO3H-modifying) to excellent (> 99%) upon only 6 mol% CF3SO3H loading without any noble-metal additive. Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and C-13-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) demonstrated that CF3SO3H modification results in the alpha,beta-enone polar C = O bond sitting away from rather than near to the active sites of polar TiO2 catalysts.
