Rauhut-Currier (RC) reaction is an effective atom-economic method to construct C-C bond. However, the application of this reaction is limited by the lack of selectivity. Herein, an efficient intermolecular cross Rauhut-Currier reaction between chalcones and acrylates in the presence of the tributylphosphine catalyst was developed, the reactions were carried out in mild conditions, and performed well with a series of substrates, delivering the desired products with acceptable to good yields.

Plant viral diseases, known as plant cancer, with high contagiosity can substantially reduce crop quality and yield. To identify potential anti-tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) agents with different mechanisms, a series of novel alpha-aminophosphonate derivatives containing a chalcone moiety were designed and synthesized. Bioassay results revealed that some target compounds exhibited improved curative activity against TMV in vivo, and the EC50 value of compound B-3 was 356.7 mg L-1. The activities of the defensive enzymes POD and CAT from tobacco leaves treated with B-3 and B-17 showed that these target compounds could improve the photosynthetic ability of the leaves and activate plant host resistance against TMV infection. The binding constant between B-3 and TMV Coat Protein (CP) (2.51 x 10(8) M-1), calculated by the fluorescence titration experiment and docking results, revealed that B-3 has a strong interaction with TMV CP. Further docking analysis revealed that B-3 was embedded between two layers of the TMV CP, which was consistent with the 2:1 binding mode of TMV CP and B-3 determined by the binding affinity experiment. The TEM morphological study of TMV treated with B-3 and B-17 indicated that this series of target compounds may trigger the disassembly of TMV by interacting directly with TMV CP. This study provides new insight for the discovery of antiviral compounds with two different mechanisms of action.

A novel 2-thiopyrimidine/chalcone hybrid was designed, synthesised, and evaluated for their cytotoxic activities against three different cell lines, K-562, MCF-7, and HT-29. The most active cytotoxic derivatives were 9d, 9f, 9n, and 9p (IC50=0.77-1.74 mu M, against K-562 cell line), 9a and 9r (IC50=1.37-3.56 mu M against MCF-7 cell line), and 9a, 9l, and 9n (IC50=2.10 and 2.37 mu M against HT-29 cell line). Compounds 9a, 9d, 9f, 9n, and 9r were further evaluated for their cytotoxicity against normal fibroblast cell line WI38. Moreover, STAT3 and STAT5a inhibitory activities were determined for the most active derivatives 9a, 9d, 9f, 9n, and 9r. Dual inhibitory activity was observed in compound 9n (IC50=113.31 and 50.75 mu M, against STAT3 and STAT5a, respectively). Prediction of physicochemical properties, drug likeness score, pharmacokinetic and toxic properties was detected.

The (Fmes)BH2 center dot SMe2 reagent (7) reacts sequentially with an acetylene and, e.g., xylylisonitrile in a convenient three-component reaction to give a series of unprecedented dihydro-1,3-azaborole derivatives 16. The tolane-derived example 16a was deprotonated and used as a ligand in organometallic chemistry. Compounds 16 served as the starting materials for the straightforward synthesis of various dihydro-1,3-azaborinine derivatives by treatment with an isonitrile. Several diaryldihydro-1,3 azaboroles showed interesting photophysical properties such as aggregation-induced emission and high fluorescence quantum yields.

Phosphorus (P) is one the least available essential plant macronutrients in soils that is a major constraint on plant growth. Soybean (Glycine max L.) production is often limited due to low P availability. The better management of P deficiency requires improvement of soybean’s P use efficiency. Sugars are implicated in P starvation responses, and a complete understanding of the role of sucrose together with P in coordinating P starvation responses is missing in soybean. This study explored global metabolomic changes in previously screened low-P-tolerant (Liaodou, L13) and low-P-sensitive (Tiefeng 3, T3) soybean genotypes by liquid chromatography coupled mass spectrometry. We also studied the root morphological response to sucrose application (1%) in P-starved soybean genotypes against normal P supply. Root morphology in L13 genotype has significantly improved P starvation responses as compared to the T3 genotype. Exogenous sucrose application greatly affected root length, root volume, and root surface area in L13 genotype while low-P-sensitive genotype, i.e., T3, only responded by increasing number of lateral roots. Root : shoot ratio increased after sucrose treatment regardless of P conditions, in both genotypes. T3 showed a relatively higher number of differentially accumulated metabolites between P-starved and normal P conditions as compared to L13 genotype. Common metabolites accumulated under the influence of sucrose were 5-O-methylembelin, D-glucuronic acid, and N-acetyl-L-phenylalanine. We have discussed the possible roles of the pathways associated with these metabolites. The differentially accumulated metabolites between both genotypes under the influence of sucrose are also discussed. These results are important to further explore the role of sucrose in the observed pathways. Especially, our results are relevant to formulate strategies for improving P efficiency of soybean genotypes with different P efficiencies.

Herein, the universal design of high-efficiency stimuli-responsive luminous materials endowed with mechanochromic luminescence (MCL) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) functions is reported. The origin of the unique stimuli-triggered TADF switching for a series of carbazole-isophthalonitrile-based donor-acceptor (D-A) luminogens is demonstrated based on systematic photophysical and X-ray analysis, coupled with theoretical calculations. It was revealed that a tiny alteration of the intramolecular D-A twisting in the excited-state structures governed by the solid morphologies is responsible for this dynamic TADF switching behavior. This concept is applicable to the fabrication of bicolor emissive organic light-emitting diodes using a single TADF emitter.

Olefin aminations are important synthetic technologies for the construction of aliphatic C-N bonds. Here we report a catalytic protocol for olefin hydroamidation that proceeds through transient amidyl radical intermediates that are formed via proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) activation of the strong N-H bonds in N-alkyl amides by an excited-state iridium photocatalyst and a dialkyl phosphate base. This method exhibits a broad substrate scope, high functional group tolerance, and amenability to use in cascade polycyclization reactions. The feasibility of this PCET protocol in enabling the intermolecular anti-Markovnikov hydroamidation reactions of unactivated olefins is also demonstrated.
