We herein report highly chemoselective transfer hydrogenation of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds to saturated carbonyls with formic acid as a hydrogen donor over a stable and recyclable heterogeneous Pd nano particles (NPs) on N,O-dual doped hierarchical porous biomass-derived carbon. The synergistic effect between Pd NPs and incorporated heteroatoms on carbon plays a critical role on promoting the reaction efficiency. A series of alpha,beta-aromatic and aliphatic unsaturated carbonyl compounds was selectively reduced to their corresponding saturated carbonyls in up to 97% isolated yields with good tolerance of various functional groups. In addition, the catalyst can be successively reused for at least 6 times without significant loss in reaction efficiency.

One-step synthesis of beta-carboxyl ketones from alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones using CO2 as a feedstock by photoelectro-synergetic catalysis is reported herein. In this ambient system, silica nanowires (SiNWs) electrode not only acts as the working electrode but also harvests extra light energy to promote the reaction. Following a possible two-step single-electron-transfer process, various substrates exhibit good efficiency with up to 98% product yield, and the method shows wide functional group tolerance.

A transition metal free expedient approach for the C=C bond cleavage of electron deficient alkenes such as arylidene Meldrum’s acid and malononitrile derivatives are discussed. The C=C bond of these compound were cleaved to benzoic acid in good yield at high temperature. Most importantly, with oxone in CH3CN/H2O at 45 degrees C or m-CPBA in DCM or NaClO2 in THE/H2O or PIDA in THE at room temperature furnished benzaldehyde derivatives selectively in excellent yields. Herein, we report a radical borylation of aromatic amines through a homolytic C(sp(2))-N bond cleavage. This method capitalizes on a simple and mild activation via a pyrylium reagent ((Sc)Pyry-OTf) thus priming the amino group for reactivity. The combination of terpyridine and a diboron reagent triggers a radical reaction which cleaves the C(sp(2))-N bond and forges a new C(sp(2))-B bond. The unique non-planar structure of the pyridinium intermediate, provides the necessary driving force for the aryl radical formation. The method permits borylation of a wide variety of aromatic amines indistinctively of the electronic environment.

Nano-ferrite-supported Cu nanoparticles (Fe-dopamine-Cu NPs) catalyzed anti-Markovnikov-selective hydroboration of alkenes with B(2)pin(2) is reported under mild reaction conditions. This protocol can be applied to a broad range of substrates with high functional group compatibility. In addition, we demonstrated the use of Fe-dopamine-Cu NPs as a catalyst for the beta-borylation of alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones and ester, providing alkylboronate esters in up to 98% yield. A new heterogeneous acid catalyst based on a natural resource, Tunisian clay (Clay-H0.5), has been prepared and characterized by FT-IR, FE-SEM, and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), as well as chemical composition, cation exchange capacity, specific surface area, and pore volume. Acid treatment for 0.5 h enlarged the surface area from 78.24 to 186.10 m(2)/g and pore volume (PV) from 0.186 to 0.281 cm(3)/g. The catalytic activity of this material was investigated in ketalization reaction under mild solvent-free conditions. This achieved up to 92% isolated yield for only 10 wt.% of the catalyst. This environmentally friendly method has advantages such as simple work-up procedure, avoidance of organic solvents, and good performance in ketalization reactions. Importantly, the Clay-H0.5 catalyst showed good recyclability where insignificant activity loss was exhibited even after six runs. Synthesized cyclic ketals were tested for their possible antileishmanial and antibacterial activities as well as antifungal activity. Biological screening showed that compound 11 had important antileishmanial activity against both L. major and L. infantum, while compound 14 also had significant antibacterial activity against four gram-positive and two gram-negative bacteria, and antifungal activity against Candida albicans, with minimal inhibitory concentration values ranging from 15.62 mu g/mL to 125 mu g/mL.

Plant viral diseases, known as plant cancer, with high contagiosity can substantially reduce crop quality and yield. To identify potential anti-tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) agents with different mechanisms, a series of novel alpha-aminophosphonate derivatives containing a chalcone moiety were designed and synthesized. Bioassay results revealed that some target compounds exhibited improved curative activity against TMV in vivo, and the EC50 value of compound B-3 was 356.7 mg L-1. The activities of the defensive enzymes POD and CAT from tobacco leaves treated with B-3 and B-17 showed that these target compounds could improve the photosynthetic ability of the leaves and activate plant host resistance against TMV infection. The binding constant between B-3 and TMV Coat Protein (CP) (2.51 x 10(8) M-1), calculated by the fluorescence titration experiment and docking results, revealed that B-3 has a strong interaction with TMV CP. Further docking analysis revealed that B-3 was embedded between two layers of the TMV CP, which was consistent with the 2:1 binding mode of TMV CP and B-3 determined by the binding affinity experiment. The TEM morphological study of TMV treated with B-3 and B-17 indicated that this series of target compounds may trigger the disassembly of TMV by interacting directly with TMV CP. This study provides new insight for the discovery of antiviral compounds with two different mechanisms of action.

A catalytic annulation is presented that provides straightforward, modular synthetic access to 3-substituted indanones from benzoic acids and alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones. It is catalyzed by a bimetallic Ir/In system and proceeds via hydroarylation followed by Claisen condensation and optional retro-Claisen deacylation. The annulation may be combined into a one-pot procedure with the synthesis of the unsaturated ketone substrates from aldehydes and acetone. The chelate assistance strategy was devised to promote a highly regioselective catalytic C-C bond activation reaction of saturated and unsaturated carbonyl compounds. The cationic Ru-H complex 1 was found to be an effective catalyst for mediating the coupling reaction of 1,2-disubstituted indoles with alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones, in which the regioselective C-alpha-C-beta activation of the carbonyl substrates has been achieved in forming the 3-alkylindole products. The analogous coupling reaction of indoles with saturated aldehydes and ketones directly led to the C-alpha- C-beta cleavage of the carbonyl substrates in forming the 3-allcylindole products. The coupling reaction of 1,2-dimethylinole with (E)-3-nonen-2-one and 2-propanol-d(8) showed 20-22% of deuterium incorporation to both alpha- and beta-CH2 of the 3-alkylindole product. The coupling reaction of 1,2-dimethylinole with (E)-3-nonen-2-one exhibited the most significant carbon kinetic isotope effect on the alpha-carbon of the product (C-alpha = 1.046). The Hammett plot constructed from the reaction of 1,2-dimethylinole with a series of para-substituted enones p-X-C6H4CH=CHCOCH3 (X = OMe, Me, H, Cl, CF3) showed a modest promotional effect by an electron-donating group (rho = -0.2 +/- 0.1). Several catalytically relevant Ru-H species were detected by NMR from a stoichiometric reaction mixture of the Ru-H complex 1 with 1,2-dimethylindole and (E)-3-nonen-2-one in CD2Cl2. These results support a mechanism of the catalytic coupling reaction via conjugate addition of indoles to enones followed by the C-C bond activation and hydrogenolysis steps.
