A ruthenium(II)-catalyzed Michael addition ofN-acyl pyrroles to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones has been developed by using a C-H activation strategy. The key to this selective reaction is to use an acyl group as an effective chelating group. The use of AgOTf remarkably promoted the protonolysis process and thereby facilitated the Michael addition reaction. Tandem conjugate addition, decarboxylation and esterification/amidation of coumarin 3-carboxylic acid derivatives with pyrazolones have been developed. The reactions were performed with coumarin 3-carboxylic acid/esters and pyrazolone in alcohol as a solvent to afford the corresponding pyrazolyl 2-hydroxy phenylpropionate derivatives. Amines and green solvents were employed for amidation in the addition reaction. The methodology has advantages such as excellent yields, a broad substrate scope, catalyst-free, easy purification by simple filtration without any workup, mild conditions and does not require any organic solvents, ligands, base or any additives. This is a green and general synthetic protocol, which could be applicable for the synthesis of substituted pyrazolyl phenyl propionate/amide derivatives. This approach demonstrates the importance of the coumarin 3-carboxylic acid/ester core structure for Michael addition.

The development of new techniques and materials that can separate ethylene from ethane is highly relevant in modern applications. Although adsorption-based separation techniques using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained increasing attention, the relatively low stability (especially water resistance) and unscalable synthesis of MOFs severely limit their application in real industrial scenarios. Addressing these challenges, we rationally designed and synthesized two new C2H6-selective MOF adsorbents (NKMOF-8-Br and -Me) with ultrahigh chemical and thermal stability, including water resistance. Attributed to the nonpolar/hydrophobic pore environments and appropriate pore apertures, the MOFs can capture C-2 hydrocarbon gases at ambient conditions even in high humidity. The single-crystal structures of gas@NKMOF-8 realized the direct visualization of adsorption sites of the gases. Both the single-crystal data and simulated data elucidate the mechanism of selective adsorption. Moreover, the NKMOF-8 possesses high C2H6 adsorption capacity and high selectivity, allowing for efficient C2H6/C2H4 separation, as verified by experimental breakthrough tests. Most importantly, NKMOF-8-Br and -Me can be scalably synthesized through stirring at room temperature in minutes, which confers them with great potential for industrial application. This work offers new adsorbents that can address major chemical industrial challenges and provides an in-depth understanding of the gas binding sites in a visual manner.

Strawberry is one of the most popular fruits because of its sensorial and functional properties. However, strawberry crop is sensitive to salt stress conditions. Despite plants have plasticity, high salt concentrations induce molecular, biochemical, and physiological responses in plants. There is evidence that the abscisic acid (ABA) hormone acts as a signaling molecule under stress conditions; however, the molecular mechanisms involved in the synthesis and homeostasis of ABA and in the induction of phytochemical antioxidant compounds under stress conditions remain unclear. In this study, the effect of stress induced by NaCl (salt stress – SS), with or without the simultaneous application of ABA, on the ABA, phenylpropanoids and L-ascorbic acid (AsA) metabolisms were evaluated. The physiological aspects (Na, Cl and proline concentration, photosynthetic variables) were also studied. The results showed that salt stress increases the Na and Cl content in the leaves, affects photosynthetic variables and triggers the production of proline, pelargonidin-3-O-glucoside, total phenolic compounds and AsA content, alongside the upregulation of several genes from the phenylpropanoid and flavonoid pathways. These effects were accompanied by the induction of compounds and transcripts related to ABA biosynthesis, conjugation and catabolism. Otherwise, the exogenous application of ABA in salt stressed plants promotes a shift in gene expression and metabolism to mitigate the stress. Therefore, salt stress affects the metabolism of ABA, phenylpropanoids and AsA in strawberry increasing phytochemical composition which is strongly associated with an ABA-dependent mechanism.

In spite of the fact that a variety of reactions have been exploited for creation of innumerable porous organic polymers (POPs), aldol condensation reactions between aldehydes and ketones leading to enones remain unutilized quite inexplicably. We surmised that the enone functionality can be exploited for stabilization of Pd akin to the manner of Pd(0) in Pd-2(dba)(3) by developing POPs based on aldol condensation reactions of polycarbonyl compounds with dialdehydes, and that such materials can be employed for catalytic transformations. By subjecting rationally designed tri-/tetraacetyl-functionalized aryl amines to aldol condensations with terephthalaldehyde, three different POPs, i.e., TPAPOPs 1-3, that feature enone functionalities have been synthesized and shown to exhibit palpable gas sorption properties. Remarkably, inverse uptake for sorption of H-2 over N-2 was observed for all POPs. As surmised, the representative POP, i.e., TPAPOP-1, was found to stabilize in situ-generated Pd(0) nanoparticles to enable application of the resultant material, i.e., Pd@TPAPOP-1, as a recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for a number of organic transformations. It is shown that coupling reactions such as Suzuki and Heck, and reductions such as nitro-to-amine and hydrogenation of olefins can be accomplished in a facile manner by employing Pd@TPAPOP-1 as a heterogeneous recyclable catalyst; the aforementioned transformations have been demonstrated on a broad set of substrates for each type. Hydroboration of carbonyl compounds is an important transformation in organic chemistry, and a growing interest in catalysis has focused on abundant and nontoxic base metals. Herein we describe an efficient salen manganese catalyst for the hydroboration of a broad range of carbonyl compounds with pinacolborane. The catalytic reactions proceeded rapidly (>99% conversion in <5 min) at room temperature with very low catalyst loadings. High turnover frequency (up to 5700 h(-1)) was observed under these conditions. Several synthetically important functional groups were tolerated, and chemoselective hydroboration of aldehydes over ketones was achieved. The H/D kinetic isotopic effect of borane was determined to be 2.3. The Hammett correlation plot of a series of para-substituted acetophenone substrates, p-X-C6H6COCH3 (X = H, Me, OMe, NO2, Cl, Br, and CF3) yielded a positive slope of rho = +0.99. The crossover products were detected in the competition reaction of catecholborane and deuterated pinacolborane with acetophenone. The findings indicated a potential borane-mediated pathway that could account for the observation of the crossover products.
