Mesoporous silica-supported Rh complex catalysts were prepared by simple silane-coupling, followed by cornplexation, and characterized by FT-IR, SEM, Rh K-edge XAFS, and elemental analysis. Local structures of the Rh complexes in each sample were almost similar to those of a nonporous silica-supported diaminorhodiurn complex. Co-immobilization of a tertiary amine on the same silica surface induced slight changes to the Rh complex structure in the case of the support with smaller pores. The prepared catalysts showed high activity for the 1,4 addition reaction of phenylboronic acids. Co-immobilization of the tertiary amine increased the reaction rate by more than 7-fold, with turnover number of nearly 8500. The catalytic performance achieved with this novel system is with much higher than that reported previously with a nonporous silica-supported catalyst. The mesoporous silica-supported Rh complex-tertiary amine showed a wide substrate scope, including unsaturated ketones and nitriles. This co-immobilized tertiary amine may activate phenylboronic acid to enhance its reactivity in the transmetalation step with Rh-OH species.

We report herein an intramolecular KI/TBHP mediated oxidative dehydrogenative C(sp(3))-H amination reaction to synthesize a diverse array of trans-2,3-disubstituted aziridines in good yields under mild conditions. The synthetic utility of this protocol was further highlighted by a one-pot, two-step synthesis of unprotected aziridines.

Ketones are of great importance in synthesis, biology, and pharmaceuticals. This paper reports an iridium complexes-catalyzed cross-coupling of alcohols via hydrogen borrowing, affording a series of alpha-alkylated ketones in high yield (86 %-95 %) and chemoselectivities (>99 : 1). This methodology has the advantages of low catalyst loading (0.1 mol%) and environmentally benign water as the solvent. Studies have shown the amount of base has a great impact on chemoselectivities. Meanwhile, deuteration experiments show water plays an important role in accelerating the reduction of the unsaturated ketones intermediates. Remarkably, a gram-scale experiment demonstrates this methodology of iridium-catalyzed cross-coupling of alcohols has potential application in the practical synthesis of alpha-alkylated ketones.

We herein report highly chemoselective transfer hydrogenation of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds to saturated carbonyls with formic acid as a hydrogen donor over a stable and recyclable heterogeneous Pd nano particles (NPs) on N,O-dual doped hierarchical porous biomass-derived carbon. The synergistic effect between Pd NPs and incorporated heteroatoms on carbon plays a critical role on promoting the reaction efficiency. A series of alpha,beta-aromatic and aliphatic unsaturated carbonyl compounds was selectively reduced to their corresponding saturated carbonyls in up to 97% isolated yields with good tolerance of various functional groups. In addition, the catalyst can be successively reused for at least 6 times without significant loss in reaction efficiency.

Magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) have been evaluated for inhibiting microbial growth and biofilm formation. In this study the effect of the nanocomposite Moroccan propolis extract / MNPs acting against methicillin resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was evaluated. Chemical composition of propolis was established by pyrolysis coupled to gas chromatography and mass spectrometry method (pyrolysis GC/MS). MNPs were obtained through the co-precipitation method. The fabricated nanostructure was characterized by X-ray Diffraction (DRX), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). TEM of MNPs provided a particle average size of 15 nm, FTIR spectral analysis enabled a fast way of identification of MNPs, attesting the occurrence of the different combinations. The use of MNPs loaded with propolis and the antibiotic chloramphenicol at Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) value inhibited the bacterial growth of MSSA (methicillin susceptible strain of S. aureus) and MRSA strains. After the treatment with MNPs-OA-P-CLo nanocomposite (MNPs with oleic acid, propolis and chloramphenicol), the disruption of the bacterial cell was observed by TEM. The combination of propolis and chloramphenicol in free form at MIC value largely impaired both MSSA and MRSA strains as, after 2 h of treatment, no viable cells of MRSA 2 and MRSA 16 were recovered. Hence, the results elucidated a new antibacterial nanocomposite synthesis, for possible applications as prospective nanoantibacterial agents or drug carriers. A ruthenium-catalyzed photoredox coupling of substituted N-aryltetrahydroisoquinolines (THIQs) and different bench-stable pyridinium salts was successfully developed to give fast access to 1-benzyl-THIQs. Based on the DFT calculations, the sulfonamide was explored as an efficient hydrogen-atom transfer catalyst for the C(sp(3))-H alkylation. The combination of a metal-free photoredox catalyst and a sulfonamide catalyst enables highly regioselective alkylation of the C-H bonds adjacent to heteroatoms, which features broad substrate scope and excellent functional group compatibility. Remarkably, the sulfonamide catalyst was also applicable to the C(sp(3))-C(sp(3)) couplings through the merger of photoredox, nickel, and HAT catalysis.

A dehydrative C- and S-alkylation procedure by nucleophilic substitution of gamma-hydroxysufones with arenes and thiophenols is reported. This study represents an elegant and ecological concept to construct C-C and C-S bonds leading to unsymmetrical 1,1- and 3,3-branched propanes. The gamma-hydroxysufones underwent BF3 center dot OEt2-mediated dehydrative arylation and thiolation at room temperature and elimination at 40 degrees C. The nucleophile attack occurred on the less hindered side of a planar benzylic carbocation to furnish the title compounds with good diastereoselectivity.
