Indoles are one of the most valuable nucleophiles in Michael additions catalyzed by a proper Lewis acid. In this paper, we found that a cationic iron salt is effective to carry out the Michael addition of indoles. beta-Mono- and disubstituted enones reacted smoothly with indoles under our conditions. The cationic iron catalyst is very active, and the maximum TON was up to 425. Moreover, cationic iron-catalyzed conditions enabled a chemoselective Michael addition of a substrate possessing both enone and alpha,beta-unsaturated ester moieties.

Polymeric carbon nitride materials have been used in numerous light-to-energy conversion applications ranging from photocatalysis to optoelectronics. For a new application and modelling, we first refined the crystal structure of potassium poly(heptazine imide) (K-PHI)-a benchmark carbon nitride material in photocatalysis-by means of X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Using the crystal structure of K-PHI, periodic DFT calculations were performed to calculate the density-of-states (DOS) and localize intra band states (IBS). IBS were found to be responsible for the enhanced K-PHI absorption in the near IR region, to serve as electron traps, and to be useful in energy transfer reactions. Once excited with visible light, carbon nitrides, in addition to the direct recombination, can also undergo singlet-triplet intersystem crossing. We utilized the K-PHI centered triplet excited states to trigger a cascade of energy transfer reactions and, in turn, to sensitize, for example, singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) as a starting point to synthesis up to 25 different N-rich heterocycles.

In spite of the fact that a variety of reactions have been exploited for creation of innumerable porous organic polymers (POPs), aldol condensation reactions between aldehydes and ketones leading to enones remain unutilized quite inexplicably. We surmised that the enone functionality can be exploited for stabilization of Pd akin to the manner of Pd(0) in Pd-2(dba)(3) by developing POPs based on aldol condensation reactions of polycarbonyl compounds with dialdehydes, and that such materials can be employed for catalytic transformations. By subjecting rationally designed tri-/tetraacetyl-functionalized aryl amines to aldol condensations with terephthalaldehyde, three different POPs, i.e., TPAPOPs 1-3, that feature enone functionalities have been synthesized and shown to exhibit palpable gas sorption properties. Remarkably, inverse uptake for sorption of H-2 over N-2 was observed for all POPs. As surmised, the representative POP, i.e., TPAPOP-1, was found to stabilize in situ-generated Pd(0) nanoparticles to enable application of the resultant material, i.e., Pd@TPAPOP-1, as a recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for a number of organic transformations. It is shown that coupling reactions such as Suzuki and Heck, and reductions such as nitro-to-amine and hydrogenation of olefins can be accomplished in a facile manner by employing Pd@TPAPOP-1 as a heterogeneous recyclable catalyst; the aforementioned transformations have been demonstrated on a broad set of substrates for each type. The highly selective C = C reduction of alpha,beta-enones was realized by CF3SO3H-modifying noble-metal-free TiO2 photocatalysis. Selectivity for C = C over C = O reduction was dramatically reversed from fair (similar to 42% without CF3SO3H-modifying) to excellent (> 99%) upon only 6 mol% CF3SO3H loading without any noble-metal additive. All complexes exhibit remarkably long emission lifetimes (tau = 190-576 mu s) with high quantum efficiencies (Phi(PL) = 0.10-0.38) upon excitation with visible light in a benzene solution. The substituents on the pyrrolide rings were shown to have significant effects on the photoluminescence and electrochemical properties of these compounds. The R-2 substituents (R-2 = H, Me, Ph, or C6F5) show only limited effects on the absorption and emission profiles of the complexes but allow systematic tuning of the ground- and excited-state redox potentials over a range of almost 600 mV. The R-1 substituents (R-1 = H, Me, Ph, or 2,4,6-Me3Ph) influence both the optical and electrochemical properties through electronic effects. Additionally, the R-1 substituents have profound consequences for the structural flexibility and overall stability of the compounds. Distortions of the Zr(PDP)(2) core from idealized D-2d symmetry in the solid state can be traced to the steric profiles of the R-1 substituents and correlate with the observed Stokes shifts for each compound. The complex with the smallest ligand system, Zr((PDPH)-P-H)(2), coordinates two additional solvent molecules in a tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution, which allowed the isolation of photoluminescent, eight-coordinate Zr((PDPH)-P-H)(2) (THF)(2). The photoredox catalytic dehalogenation of aryl iodides and aryl chlorides using the most reducing derivative, Zr((PDPMe)-P-Me)(2), highlights the potential of Zr(PDP)(2) photosensitizers to promote challenging reductive transformations under mild conditions upon excitation with green light.

Hydroboration of carbonyl compounds is an important transformation in organic chemistry, and a growing interest in catalysis has focused on abundant and nontoxic base metals. Herein we describe an efficient salen manganese catalyst for the hydroboration of a broad range of carbonyl compounds with pinacolborane. The catalytic reactions proceeded rapidly (>99% conversion in <5 min) at room temperature with very low catalyst loadings. High turnover frequency (up to 5700 h(-1)) was observed under these conditions. Several synthetically important functional groups were tolerated, and chemoselective hydroboration of aldehydes over ketones was achieved. The H/D kinetic isotopic effect of borane was determined to be 2.3. The Hammett correlation plot of a series of para-substituted acetophenone substrates, p-X-C6H6COCH3 (X = H, Me, OMe, NO2, Cl, Br, and CF3) yielded a positive slope of rho = +0.99. The crossover products were detected in the competition reaction of catecholborane and deuterated pinacolborane with acetophenone. The findings indicated a potential borane-mediated pathway that could account for the observation of the crossover products. A highly efficient rongalite-mediated three-component radical annulation reaction to furnish fully substituted pyrazoles from aryldiazonium salts and alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes or ketones under metal- and oxidant-free conditions at room temperature has been developed. In this transformation, aryldiazonium salts served as the precursor of both the aryl and aryl hydrazine units. Mechanistic investigations indicated that rongalite could act as a radical initiator and reducing reagent simultaneously in the reaction.
