Two new hypervalent iodine reagents containing furan and thiophene moieties in addition to a carbonyl group in the vicinity of the iodine atom were synthesised and characterised. The X-ray analysis of both compounds revealed a strong intramolecular contact between the carbonyl oxygen and the hypervalent iodine atom with tosylate as a counter ion. The two reagents showed a broad range of synthetic applications and proved to be versatile oxidizing agents.

The catalytic alkylation of ketones with alcohols via the hydrogen borrowing methodology (HB) has the potential to be a highly efficient approach for forming new carbon-carbon bonds. However, this transformation can result in more than one product being formed. The work reported here utilises bidentate triazole-carbene ligated iridium and rhodium complexes as catalysts for the selective formation of alkylated ketone or alcohol products. Switching from an iridium centre to a rhodium centre in the complex resulted in significant changes in product selectivity. Other factors – base, base loading, solvent and reaction temperature – were also investigated to tune the selectivity further. The optimised conditions were used to demonstrate the scope of the reaction across 17 ketones and 14 alcohols containing a variety of functional groups. A series of mechanistic investigations were performed to probe the reasons behind the product selectivity, including kinetic and deuterium studies.

Triazolopyridinone derivatives are of high value in both medicinal and material chemistry. However, the chiral or hindered triazolopyridinone derivatives remain an underexplored area of chemical space because they are difficult to prepare via conventional methods. Here we report an electrochemical rearrangement for the efficient synthesis of otherwise inaccessible triazolopyridinones with diverse alkyl carboxylic acids as starting materials. This enables the efficient preparation of more than 60 functionalized triazolopyridinones under mild conditions in a sustainable manner. This method is evaluated for the late stage modification of bioactive natural products, amino acids and pharmaceuticals, and it is further applied to the decagram scale preparation of enantiopure triazolopyridinones. The control experiments support a mechanism involving an oxidative cyclization and 1,2-carbon migration. This facile and scalable rearrangement demonstrates the power of electrochemical synthesis to access otherwise-inaccessible triazolopyridinones and may find wide application in organic, material and medicinal chemistry. Chiral and hindered triazolopyridinone derivatives are an underexplored area of chemical space mainly due to their challenging synthesis via classical methods. Here, the authors report an electrochemical rearrangement for the synthesis of triazolopyridinones using diverse, available alkyl carboxylic acids as starting materials.

We herein report highly chemoselective transfer hydrogenation of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds to saturated carbonyls with formic acid as a hydrogen donor over a stable and recyclable heterogeneous Pd nano particles (NPs) on N,O-dual doped hierarchical porous biomass-derived carbon. The synergistic effect between Pd NPs and incorporated heteroatoms on carbon plays a critical role on promoting the reaction efficiency. A series of alpha,beta-aromatic and aliphatic unsaturated carbonyl compounds was selectively reduced to their corresponding saturated carbonyls in up to 97% isolated yields with good tolerance of various functional groups. In addition, the catalyst can be successively reused for at least 6 times without significant loss in reaction efficiency.

Efficient hydrogenation of electron-deficient internal olefins and alkynes access to saturate ketone with CH3OH as a single hydrogen donor under electrochemical conditions has been successfully developed. This hydrogenation strategy can be used to convert electron-deficient internal olefins and alkynes to saturate ketone under electrochemical conditions with exogenous-reductant and a metal catalyst. Mechanistic studies reveal that radical hydrogenation was involved in this transformation. Notably, various electron-deficient internal olefins and alkynes could be tolerated in such an electrochemical hydrogenation synthetic strategy and can be easily scaled up with good efficiency.

A redox-active iminoquinone motif connected with pi-delocalized pyrene core has been reported that can perform efficient two-electron oxidation of a class of substrates. The design of the molecule was inspired by the organic redox cofactor topaquinone (TPQ), which executes amine oxidation in the enzyme, copper amine oxidase. Easy oxidation of both primary and secondary alcohols happened in the presence of catalytic KOtBu, which could reduce the ligand backbone to its iminosemiquinonate form under photoinduced conditions. Moreover, this easy oxidation of alcohols under aerobic condition could be elegantly extended to multi-component, one-pot coupling for the synthesis of quinoline and pyrimidine. This organocatalytic approach is very mild (70 degrees C, 8 h) compared to a multitude of transition-metal catalysts that have been used to prepare these heterocycles. A detailed mechanistic study proves the intermediacy of the iminosemiquinonate-type radical and a critical hydrogen atom transfer step to be involved in the dehydrogenation reaction.

A series of bis(tridentate) cyclometalated oligopyridine complexes [Fe-II(C<^> N<^>N)(L)](+) have been synthesized via the reactions of [Fe-II(C<^> N<^>N-py)Br(PMe3)(2)] (1, HC<^>N-py<^>N-py = 6-(phenyI)-2,2′-bipyridine) and [Fe-II(C<^>N-ppy<^>N-isoquin)Br(PMe3)(2)] (2, HC<^>N-ppy<^>N-isoquin = 3-(4,6-diphenylpyridin-2-yl)isoquinoline with tridentate ligands L, affording [Fe-II(C<^>N-ppy<^>N-py)(4′-R-tpy)](+) (3a-e, R = H, Cl, p-ClC6H4, p-MeOC6H4, p-tol, respectively; tpy 2,2′:6′,2 ”-terpyridine), [Fe-II(C<^>N-ppy<^>N-isoquin)(tpy)](+) (4), [Fe-II(C<^>N-ppy<^>N-py)(6-(Ph2PCH2)-bpy)](+) (5, bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine), and [Fe-II(C<^>N-py<^>N-py)(6-NHC-bpy)](+) (6, NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene). Complexes 3-6 exhibit bathochromically shifted absorption bands, markedly cathodically shifted E-1/2 (Fe-III/Fe-II) values, and narrowed electrochemical band gaps in comparison to those of [Fe-II(tpy)(2)](2+), as revealed by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. DFT and TDDFT calculation studies revealed strong mixing of MLCT with LLCT transitions as origins to the major absorption bands. Complex 6 incorporating a cyclometalating unit and an NHC donor exhibits panchromic absorption, and 5 shows markedly enhanced molar absorptivity in the visible region. A femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopic study of 6, coupled with DFT and TDDFT calculations and spectroelectrochemical measurements, gave evidence for the possible involvement of a (MLCT)-M-3 state with a lifetime of 21.4 ps.
