Polymeric carbon nitride materials have been used in numerous light-to-energy conversion applications ranging from photocatalysis to optoelectronics. For a new application and modelling, we first refined the crystal structure of potassium poly(heptazine imide) (K-PHI)-a benchmark carbon nitride material in photocatalysis-by means of X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Using the crystal structure of K-PHI, periodic DFT calculations were performed to calculate the density-of-states (DOS) and localize intra band states (IBS). IBS were found to be responsible for the enhanced K-PHI absorption in the near IR region, to serve as electron traps, and to be useful in energy transfer reactions. Once excited with visible light, carbon nitrides, in addition to the direct recombination, can also undergo singlet-triplet intersystem crossing. We utilized the K-PHI centered triplet excited states to trigger a cascade of energy transfer reactions and, in turn, to sensitize, for example, singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) as a starting point to synthesis up to 25 different N-rich heterocycles.

An efficient and sustainable protocol for the hydration of alkynes has been developed under metal/acid/catalyst/ ligand-free conditions in a water/ethyl lactate mixture. The hydrogen-bond network in the ethyl lactate and water mixture plays a crucial and decisive role in activating the alkynes for hydration to afford the corresponding methyl ketones. This strategy gives the Markovnikov (ketone) addition product selectively over other possible products. The essential role of hydrogen bonding has been confirmed by experimental and theoretical techniques. A probable mechanism has been suggested by various control tests. The efficacy of the method has been further explored for the competent production of value-added alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds through the reaction of aldehydes with alkynes as ketonic surrogates. The environmentally benign hydration method takes place under mild conditions, has broad functional-group compatibility, and uses the ethyl lactate/water (1:3) medium as a green alternative in the absence of any hazardous, harmful, or expensive substances. Two chiral polymers based on binaphthol(BINOL) were synthesized. The polymer can be used as a chiral inducer to coordinate with ZnEt2 to form a recoverable self-supporting catalyst, which could be used in the asymmetric catalytic reaction of alpha, beta-unsaturated ketones. The target products of high yield and good enantioselectivity(e.e. value up to 99%) can be obtained under mild conditions. The catalytic activity was not reduced significantly after 4 or 5 cycles of recovery of the recovered polymers.

An efficient synthesis of 2H-3-nitrothiochromenes via a cascade reaction was established. Starting from commercially available o-bromobenzaldehydes and beta-nitrostyrenes with sodium sulfide nonahydrate as an inexpensive sulfur source, various substituted thiochromenes were synthesized with high functional group tolerance without any added transition metal catalyst or additive.

Nano-ferrite-supported Cu nanoparticles (Fe-dopamine-Cu NPs) catalyzed anti-Markovnikov-selective hydroboration of alkenes with B(2)pin(2) is reported under mild reaction conditions. This protocol can be applied to a broad range of substrates with high functional group compatibility. In addition, we demonstrated the use of Fe-dopamine-Cu NPs as a catalyst for the beta-borylation of alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones and ester, providing alkylboronate esters in up to 98% yield. An oxidative esterification of aldehydes with alkanols catalyzed by an in situ generated low-valent cobalt system has been developed using an enone as a mild oxidant. Mechanistic studies revealed that it proceeds through a Co(i)-catalyzed hydrogen-transfer route, wherein the -vinyl moiety in the bidentate enone functions as a hydride acceptor. Meanwhile, Co(i)-catalyzed formyl C-H activation occurred as a competing reaction leading to aldehyde dimerization. The occurrence of the usually kinetically disfavored hydride transfer step therein was significantly increased in the presence of an enone reacting as a hydride transfer initiator.

It is reported that cheap and easily available Hg(OTf)(2) can efficiently mediate the Sakurai-Hosomi reaction of N-tert-butyloxycarbonyl (Boc) amino sulfones, aldehydes, and alpha-fluoroalkyl ketones using allyltrimethylsilane, with the catalyst loading down to 0.5-5.0 mol%, enabling the facile access to synthetically valuable homoallylic alcohols or amines, respectively. A chemoselective 1,4-allylation of alpha,beta-unsaturated enones is also achieved under the catalysis of 5.0 mol% Hg(OTf)(2). In most cases, Hg(OTf)(2) exhibited intriguing properties superior to those of commonly used metal Lewis acids for such reactions, suggesting that mercury catalysis is worthwhile to explore.

The cyclic five-membered frustrated phosphane/borane Lewis pairs 11 a, b featuring the bulky octaethylhydrindacenyl- (Eind) substituent or its mono-bromo derivative ((Br)Eind) at phosphorus are monomeric at room temperature. The reactive frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) cleave dihydrogen. The cyclic FLP 11 b ((Br)Eind) undergoes 1,2-P/B addition to ethylene to give the zwitterionic heteronorbornane derivative 14 b. It reacts similarly with the carbon-carbon double bond of norbornene. With a variety of organic pi-reagents, the cyclic FLP 11 b often undergoes reaction sequences reminiscent of the Alder-Rickert reaction: the cycloaddition reaction is followed by rapid cycloreversion to form new five-membered heterocyclic FLP products with extrusion of ethene.
