Chalcones are a group of natural products with many recognized biological activities, including antiparasitic activity. Although a lot of chalcones have been synthetized and assayed against parasites, the number of structural features known to be involved in this biological property is small. Thus, in the present study, 21 chalcones were synthesized to determine the effect of substituents in the A and B rings on the activity againstLeishmania braziliensis, Trypanosoma cruzi, andPlasmodium falciparum. The compounds were active againstL. braziliensisin a structure-dependent manner. Only one compound was very active againstT. cruzi, but none of them had a significant antiplasmodial activity. The electron-donating substituents in ring B and the hydrogen bonds at C-2 ‘ with carbonyl affect the antiparasitic activity.

An efficient and flexible synthesis of a new class of chiral bifunctional NHC catalyst has been reported. These new imidazolylidene NHCs, bearing a (thio)urea function as a hydrogen bond donor promoted efficiently highly diastereoselective trans-cyclopentannulation of enals and enones in moderate to good yields (up to 69 % yield) along with excellent enantioselectivity (up to 96 % ee). This methodology could be applied to a large variety of substrates (30 examples).

A new heterogeneous acid catalyst based on a natural resource, Tunisian clay (Clay-H0.5), has been prepared and characterized by FT-IR, FE-SEM, and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), as well as chemical composition, cation exchange capacity, specific surface area, and pore volume. Acid treatment for 0.5 h enlarged the surface area from 78.24 to 186.10 m(2)/g and pore volume (PV) from 0.186 to 0.281 cm(3)/g. The catalytic activity of this material was investigated in ketalization reaction under mild solvent-free conditions. This achieved up to 92% isolated yield for only 10 wt.% of the catalyst. This environmentally friendly method has advantages such as simple work-up procedure, avoidance of organic solvents, and good performance in ketalization reactions. Importantly, the Clay-H0.5 catalyst showed good recyclability where insignificant activity loss was exhibited even after six runs. Synthesized cyclic ketals were tested for their possible antileishmanial and antibacterial activities as well as antifungal activity. Biological screening showed that compound 11 had important antileishmanial activity against both L. major and L. infantum, while compound 14 also had significant antibacterial activity against four gram-positive and two gram-negative bacteria, and antifungal activity against Candida albicans, with minimal inhibitory concentration values ranging from 15.62 mu g/mL to 125 mu g/mL.

Nicotinic acid hydrazide was incorporated into new 4,5-dihydro-5-hydroxy-3,5-diphenylpyrazol-1-yl derivatives. Compounds 6a-h were synthesized, and their antihyperlipidemic activity was evaluated in high cholesterol diet-fed rat model. Compounds 6e, 6f were found to decrease the levels of serum total cholesterol by 14-19% compared to control group. Total triglycerides were also reduced by 24-28% and LDL cholesterol by 16%. As expected from parent niacin, compounds 6e and 6f caused an elevation of HDL cholesterol by 33-41%. Docking study supported the ability of designed compounds to block NPC1L1 active site in a manner similar to that observed with ezetimibe.

An inexpensive, mild, and highly efficient epoxidation protocol has been developed involving bubbling SO2F2 gas into a solution of olefin, 30% aqueous hydrogen peroxide, and 4 N aqueous potassium carbonate in 1,4-dioxane at room temperature for 1 h with the formation of the corresponding epoxides in good to excellent yields. The novel SO2F2/H2O2/K2CO3 epoxidizing system is suitable to a variety of olefinic substrates including electron-rich and electron-deficient ones.

A series of 1,3,5-triazine analogues, incorporating aminobenzene sulfonamide, aminoalcohol/ phenol, piperazine, chalcone, or stilbene structural motifs, were evaluated as potential antioxidants. The compounds were prepared by using step-by-step nucleophilic substitution of chlorine atoms in starting 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine. Reactions were catalyzed by Cu(I)-supported on a weakly acidic resin. The radical scavenging activity was determined in terms of %inhibition activity and EC50, using the ABTS method. Trolox and ascorbic acid (ASA) were used as standards. In the lowest concentration 1 X 10(-4) M, the %inhibition activity values at 0 min were comparable with both standards at least for 10 compounds. After 60 min, compounds 5, 6, 13, and 25 showed nearly twice %inhibition (73.44-87.09%) in comparison with the standards (Trolox = 41.49%; ASA = 31.07%). Values of EC50 at 60 min (17.16-27.78 mu M) were 5 times lower for compounds 5, 6, 13, and 25 than EC50 of both standards (trolox = 178.33 mu M; ASA = 147.47 mu M). Values of EC50 correlated with %inhibition activity. Based on these results, the presented 1,3,5-triazine analogues have a high potential in the treatment of illnesses caused or related to oxidative stress.

Polyaniline coated on particles of celite is used as support to load palladium catalyst. This heterogenized Celite center dot PANI center dot Pd system, is used as an efficient catalyst for chemoselective hydrogenation reactions. The catalyst is characterized by usual spectral, analytical techniques and studied for hydrogenation reactions at ambient conditions. The mild reaction conditions allow the control over the reactions and excellent selectivity is achieved in number of conversions. Weakly coordinating, ketone-directed C-H vinylation using vinyl acetate is reported here for a wide range of aromatic ketones such as acetophenones, diaryl ketones, chromones and biologically relevant chalcones under cost-effective and air-stable cobalt(iii)-catalysis. Regioselective, mono-vinylation occurs for challenging vinyl substitution-free styrenes in moderate to good yields, and this moiety has been used to synthesize functionalized indanone, alpha-naphthol and an advanced intermediate for bruguierol A synthesis. An acrylate-surrogate provided the corresponding alkenylated product under these vinylation conditions. Detailed mechanistic studies are carried out to support the proposed catalytic cycle.

Novel methodologies are essential to reduce the concentrations of nutrients, microbes and chemicals from sewage prior to discharge into the environment. These are required to preserve and maintain the environmental conditions and human health. Although several techniques exist for the reduction of the chemicals and microbes, the efficacy of the techniques is not significant due to significant physical and structural diversity. Treatment of sewage with microalgae has gained popularity over the past few years, and limited investigations were reported in the literature. The present study deals with the treatment of household sewage treatment plant by using green algae, namely, Scenedesmus, Chlorella and their combination. During the experiment, it was observed that the algae grow under adverse condition and utilised the available nutrient for their survival. Further, the advantage of algae treatment is that they are efficient, ecofriendly, renewable and very much cost-efficient. Thus, many disorders can be prevented by using this treatment. The new study on mechanism of degradation and isolation of commercially important enzymes will be very significant.

A series of new mix aza- and thia-macrocyclic glycolipids (9, 111, 16 and 17) have been synthesized and their enantiomeric selectivity was studied. The synthesis of the macrocycles involved a simple protection of two hydroxyl groups of the glycolipids followed by building up the mix-heteroatom macrocyclic in simple sequences. The macrocycles and previously investigated analogues (la, n, a and 21) have been applied as phase transfer catalysts in the enantioselective Michael addition of 2-nitropropane to chalcone and showed good-to-excellent enantiomer excess (ee). Among the catalysts, the galactose aza-crown ether-based glycolipid 21 proved to be the most effective with 90% ee.
