A sustainable and practical protocol to prepare epoxides has been established by using air as the oxidant in the presence of K2CO3 in isopropylbenzene (CM) at 80-140 degrees C. The olefins are successfully converted into their corresponding epoxides in yields of up to 99%. CM and K2CO3 are reused in the scale-up recycling experiments. A reaction mechanism dominated by the radical pathway is proposed according to the control experiments and kinetic analysis.

Terpenes constitute one of the largest groups of natural products. They exhibit a wide range of biological activities including antioxidant, anticancer, and drug resistance modulating properties. Saffron extract and its terpene constituents have been demonstrated to be cytotoxic against various types of cancer cells, including breast, liver, lung, pancreatic, and colorectal cancer. In the present work, we have studied anticancer properties of TMPE, a newly synthesized monoterpene derivative of beta-cyclocitral-the main volatile produced by the stigmas of unripe crocuses. TMPE presented selective cytotoxic activity to doxorubicin-resistant colon cancer cells and was identified to be an effective MDR modulator in doxorubicin-resistant cancer cells. Synergy between this derivative and doxorubicin was observed. Most probably, TMPE inhibited transport activity of ABCB1 protein without affecting its expression level. Analysis of TMPE physicochemical parameters suggested it was not likely to be transported by ABCB1. Molecular modeling showed TMPE being more reactive molecule than the parental compound-beta-cyclocitral. Analysis of electrostatic potential maps of both compounds prompted us to hypothesize that reduced reactivity as well as susceptibility to electrophilic attack were related to the lower general toxicity of beta-cyclocitral. All of the above pointed to TMPE as an interesting candidate molecule for MDR reversal in cancer cells.

An efficient and sustainable protocol for the hydration of alkynes has been developed under metal/acid/catalyst/ ligand-free conditions in a water/ethyl lactate mixture. The hydrogen-bond network in the ethyl lactate and water mixture plays a crucial and decisive role in activating the alkynes for hydration to afford the corresponding methyl ketones. This strategy gives the Markovnikov (ketone) addition product selectively over other possible products. The essential role of hydrogen bonding has been confirmed by experimental and theoretical techniques. A probable mechanism has been suggested by various control tests. The efficacy of the method has been further explored for the competent production of value-added alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds through the reaction of aldehydes with alkynes as ketonic surrogates. The environmentally benign hydration method takes place under mild conditions, has broad functional-group compatibility, and uses the ethyl lactate/water (1:3) medium as a green alternative in the absence of any hazardous, harmful, or expensive substances. We describe an efficient synthesis of 2,4-substituted pyrido[4,3-d]pyrimidin-5(6H)-ones, which involves the acid-promoted cyclization of cyano enamine 15 to afford 2,4-bis(methylthio)pyrido[4,3-d]pyrimidin-5(6H)-one 17 as a key intermediate. Selective displacement of the 4-methylthio group by a wide range of anilines followed by oxidation of the 2-methylthio group and subsequent substitution by amines enabled the synthesis of a variety of 2,4-disubstituted pyrido[4,3-djpyrimidin-5(6H)-ones. Polymeric carbon nitride materials have been used in numerous light-to-energy conversion applications ranging from photocatalysis to optoelectronics. For a new application and modelling, we first refined the crystal structure of potassium poly(heptazine imide) (K-PHI)-a benchmark carbon nitride material in photocatalysis-by means of X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Using the crystal structure of K-PHI, periodic DFT calculations were performed to calculate the density-of-states (DOS) and localize intra band states (IBS). IBS were found to be responsible for the enhanced K-PHI absorption in the near IR region, to serve as electron traps, and to be useful in energy transfer reactions. Once excited with visible light, carbon nitrides, in addition to the direct recombination, can also undergo singlet-triplet intersystem crossing. We utilized the K-PHI centered triplet excited states to trigger a cascade of energy transfer reactions and, in turn, to sensitize, for example, singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) as a starting point to synthesis up to 25 different N-rich heterocycles.

A group of 2-methyl-4-phenylquinoline-chalcone analogs (2a-2x) was synthesized and investigated for anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects as cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors. Pharmacological experiments identified 24 analogs that exhibited anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic activities. In particular, compounds 2c, 2k, and 2w markedly shortened immobility times and exhibited the most anti-depressant activity. In addition, the mechanisms of action of the analogs 2c, 2k, and 2w were likely related to increased serotonin levels in the central nervous system. Compounds 2c, 2k, and 2w displayed reasonable cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitory effects (IC50 values from 0.21 to 0.29 mu mol/L) similar to celecoxib (IC50: 0.19 mu mol/L) in vitro. A molecular docking study of compound 2k also was conducted.

Nano-ferrite-supported Cu nanoparticles (Fe-dopamine-Cu NPs) catalyzed anti-Markovnikov-selective hydroboration of alkenes with B(2)pin(2) is reported under mild reaction conditions. Herein, we report a radical borylation of aromatic amines through a homolytic C(sp(2))-N bond cleavage.
