Selenophenolato hydrido iron(II) complexes 1-3 cis-[(H)(SeAr)Fe(PMe3)(4)] (Ar = C6H5 (1), p-MeOC6H4 (2) and o-MeC6H4 (3)) could catalyze transfer hydrogenation of aldehydes and ketones. Among the three complexes, catalyst 1 exhibited the highest catalytic activity. The catalytic reactions took place under very mild conditions, using isopropanol as solvent and hydrogen source, (BuONa)-Bu-t as base under 60-80 degrees C. This catalytic system has good tolerance for many functional groups, such as halides, C=C double bonds, nitro groups and cyano groups at the phenyl ring of the substrates.

Tyrosinase is an important component of the enzyme polyphenol oxidase, which upon contact with the phenolic substrates forms the pigment melanin and induces undesirable food browning. The phenolic and triterpenoid compounds that naturally occur in plants are well known as tyrosinase inhibitors. Combretum micranthum (CM) leaves, Euphorbia hirta (EH) plant, and Anacardium occidentale (AO) fruits are traditionally known to have potential anti-tyrosinase activities. The aim of this study was to optimize the ultrasound-assisted extraction of secondary metabolites from these matrices, and to evaluate in tubo the antityrosinase activity of these extracts. Efforts were also taken to profile the secondary metabolites, mainly the phenolic and triterpenoid compounds, in order to understand their probable association with tyrosinase inhibition. The optimal ultrasound-assisted extraction conditions for simultaneous extraction of phenolic, and triterpenoid compounds were determined. The aqueous fraction of these extracts showed significant antityrosinase activity, with the CM leaves exhibiting the strongest inhibitory effect (IC50 of 0.58 g.L-1). The predominant metabolic compounds from these natural extracts were putatively identified by using a high-resolution quadrupole-time of flight (QToF) LC-MS instrument. The high-resolution accurate mass-based screening resulted in identification of 88 predominant metabolites, which included dihydrodaidzein-7-O-glucuronide, micromeric acid, syringic acid, morin, quercetin-3-O-(6 ”-malonyl-glucoside), 4-hydroxycoumarin, dihydrocaffeic acid-3-O-glucuronide, to name some, with less than 5 ppm of mass error.

An efficient approach to prepare trifluoromethyl-alpha-carbolines and ester group-substituted alpha-carbolines via the tandem cyclization reaction of 2-(2-aminophenyl)acetonitriles and trifluoromethyl 1,3-diones or beta,gamma-unsaturated alpha-ketoesters was reported. A ruthenium(II)-catalyzed Michael addition ofN-acyl pyrroles to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones has been developed by using a C-H activation strategy. The key to this selective reaction is to use an acyl group as an effective chelating group. The use of AgOTf remarkably promoted the protonolysis process and thereby facilitated the Michael addition reaction. Tandem conjugate addition, decarboxylation and esterification/amidation of coumarin 3-carboxylic acid derivatives with pyrazolones have been developed. The reactions were performed with coumarin 3-carboxylic acid/esters and pyrazolone in alcohol as a solvent to afford the corresponding pyrazolyl 2-hydroxy phenylpropionate derivatives. Amines and green solvents were employed for amidation in the addition reaction. The methodology has advantages such as excellent yields, a broad substrate scope, catalyst-free, easy purification by simple filtration without any workup, mild conditions and does not require any organic solvents, ligands, base or any additives. This is a green and general synthetic protocol, which could be applicable for the synthesis of substituted pyrazolyl phenyl propionate/amide derivatives. This approach demonstrates the importance of the coumarin 3-carboxylic acid/ester core structure for Michael addition.

A simple and efficient strategy for the assembly of polysubstituted thiophenes and the chemoselective reduction of alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones via the reaction of enones with elemental sulfur and by a simple switching of the reaction solvent is described. The development of new techniques and materials that can separate ethylene from ethane is highly relevant in modern applications. Although adsorption-based separation techniques using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained increasing attention, the relatively low stability (especially water resistance) and unscalable synthesis of MOFs severely limit their application in real industrial scenarios. Addressing these challenges, we rationally designed and synthesized two new C2H6-selective MOF adsorbents (NKMOF-8-Br and -Me) with ultrahigh chemical and thermal stability, including water resistance. Attributed to the nonpolar/hydrophobic pore environments and appropriate pore apertures, the MOFs can capture C-2 hydrocarbon gases at ambient conditions even in high humidity. The single-crystal structures of gas@NKMOF-8 realized the direct visualization of adsorption sites of the gases. Both the single-crystal data and simulated data elucidate the mechanism of selective adsorption. Moreover, the NKMOF-8 possesses high C2H6 adsorption capacity and high selectivity, allowing for efficient C2H6/C2H4 separation, as verified by experimental breakthrough tests. Most importantly, NKMOF-8-Br and -Me can be scalably synthesized through stirring at room temperature in minutes, which confers them with great potential for industrial application. This work offers new adsorbents that can address major chemical industrial challenges and provides an in-depth understanding of the gas binding sites in a visual manner.
