Rauhut-Currier (RC) reaction is an effective atom-economic method to construct C-C bond. However, the application of this reaction is limited by the lack of selectivity. Herein, an efficient intermolecular cross Rauhut-Currier reaction between chalcones and acrylates in the presence of the tributylphosphine catalyst was developed, the reactions were carried out in mild conditions, and performed well with a series of substrates, delivering the desired products with acceptable to good yields.

To improve the properties of mesoporous carbon (MC), used as a catalyst support within electrodes, MC fibers (MCFs) were successfully synthesized by combining organic-organic self-assembly and electrospinning deposition and optimizing heat treatment conditions. The pore structure was controlled by varying the experimental conditions. Among MCFs, MCF-A, which was made in the most acidic condition, resulted in the largest pore diameter (4-5 nm), and the porous structure and carbonization degree were further optimized by adjusting heat treatment conditions. Then, since the fiber structure is expected to have an advantage when MCFs are applied to devices, MCF-A layers were prepared by spray printing. For the resistance to compression, MCF-A layers showed higher resistance (5.5% change in thickness) than the bulk MC layer (12.8% change in thickness). The through-plane resistance was lower when the fiber structure remained more within the thin layer, for example, +8 m omega for 450 rpm milled MCF-A and +12 m omega for 800 rpm milled MCF-A against the gas diffusion layer (GDL) 25BC carbon paper without a carbon layer coating. The additional advantages of MCF-A compared with bulk MC demonstrate that MCF-A has the potential to be used as a catalyst support within electrodes in energy devices.

An efficient and flexible synthesis of a new class of chiral bifunctional NHC catalyst has been reported. These new imidazolylidene NHCs, bearing a (thio)urea function as a hydrogen bond donor promoted efficiently highly diastereoselective trans-cyclopentannulation of enals and enones in moderate to good yields (up to 69 % yield) along with excellent enantioselectivity (up to 96 % ee). This methodology could be applied to a large variety of substrates (30 examples).

Terpenoid derivatives, which contain a preserved carane system in their structure, exhibit a broad spectrum of biological activities. Among them, we can distinguish insecticides, structures with pharmacological application etc. In the presented paper, the substrate – (-)-cis-caran-trans-4-ol was transformed using the reactions of typical organic synthesis to obtain novel derivatives. Most importantly, bromolactone ((-)-(1R,4R,6S)-2′-(bromomethyl)-4,7,7-trimethylspiro[bicyclo[4.1.0]heptan-3,3′-furan]-5′(4’H)-one) with the preserved carane system was synthesized. This bromolactone was tested for antifeedant activity against the lesser mealworm, Alphitobius diaperinus Panzer, and peach potato aphid (Myzus persicae). In addition, its moderate antibacterial activity was observed against the Bacillus subtilis strain (with Minimal Inhibitory Concentration of 200 mu g/mL).

Several hundred (396) compounds from New Zealand flora with medicinal properties were analyzed for their physicochemical properties. It was found that approximately 10% fulfilled all the requirements to be considered to be lead-like, over half of the compounds were deemed to be in the drug-like space and approximate to 75% were in the known drug space. These results indicate the presence of a significant proportion of compounds that are of particular interest to pursue as potential lead compounds or therapeutics. Additionally, compound classes were analyzed separatelymost carbonyl-containing compounds (aldehydes, ketones, esters and lactones), along with phenols were the most lead-like compounds, which also displayed very good proportions in the drug-like and known drug space. The information presented herein can be harnessed and utilized in future work, through focussing on the compounds and compound classes that exhibit high-levels of lead-likeness for further development.

In an attempt to synthesise new tyrosinase inhibitors, we designed and synthesised a series of chalcone-hydroxypyridinone hybrids as potential tyrosinase inhibitors adopting strategic modifications of kojic acid. All the newly synthesised compounds were characterised by NMR and mass spectrometry. Initial screening of the target compounds demonstrated that compounds1a,1d, and1nhad relatively strong inhibitory activities against tyrosinase monophenolase, with IC(50)values of 3.07 +/- 0.85, 2.25 +/- 0.8 and 2.75 +/- 1.19 mu M, respectively. The inhibitory activity against monophenolase was 6- to 8-fold higher than that of kojic acid. Compounds1a,1d, and1nalso showed inhibition of diphenolase, with IC(50)values of 17.05 +/- 0.07, 11.70 +/- 0.03 and 19.3 +/- 0.28 mu M, respectively. The inhibition kinetics of diphenolase indicates that compounds1aand1dinduce reversible inhibition on tyrosinase. Finally, we found that copper coordination should be one of the important inhibitory mechanism of these compounds in tyrosinase.

The synthesis of chiral unsaturated gamma-lactams is reported featuring a highly enantioselective palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation of alpha,gamma-disubstituted 2-silyloxypyrroles. This method allows a straightforward access to optically active gamma-lactams bearing an alpha-quaternary stereogenic center in high yields (up to 93%), high regioselectivities (up to >20:1), and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 95% ee). To further demonstrate the synthetic utility of the method, the resulting allylated products were converted to various versatile chiral building blocks, such as pyrrolidines and pyrrolidinones.

In many metal catalyses, the traditional strategy of removing chloride ions is to add silver salts via anion exchange to obtain highly active catalysts. Herein, we reported an alternative strategy of removing chloride anions from ruthenium trichloride using an organic [P+-N-] zwitterionic compound via multiple hydrogen bond interactions. The resultant organic-metal hybrid catalytic system has successfully been applied to the aerobic oxidation of alcohols, tetrahydroquinolines, and indolines under mild conditions. The performance of zwitterion is far superior to that of many other common Lewis bases or Bronsted bases. Mechanistic studies revealed that the zwitterion triggers the dissociation of chloride from ruthenium trichloride via nonclassical hydrogen bond interaction. Preliminary studies show that the zwitterion is applicable to catalytic transfer semi-hydrogenation.

A divergent strategy for the facile preparation of various enantioenriched phenylthio-substituted lactones was developed based on Lewis base/Bronsted acid co-catalyzed thiolation of homoallylic acids. The acid-controlled regiodivergent cyclization (6-endo vs. 5-exo) and acid-mediated stereoselective rearrangement of phenylthio-substituted lactones were explored. Experimental and computational studies were performed to clarify the origins of the regioselectivity and enantioselectivity. The calculation results suggest that C-O and C-S bond formation might occur simultaneously, without formation of a commonly supposed catalyst-coordinated thiiranium ion intermediate and the potential pi-pi stacking between substrate and SPh as an important factor in the enantio-determining step. Finally, this methodology was applied in the rapid syntheses of the bioactive natural products (+)-ricciocarpin A and (R)-dodecan-4-olide.

The use of the unprecedented annulating reagents methyl N-(tert-butylsulfinyl)-4-chlorobutanimidate and methyl N-(tert-butylsulfinyl)-5-bromopentanimidate enables the diastereoselective preparation of 5- and 6-membered carbocycles bearing three contiguous stereocenters. These synthons undergo cycloaddition with a variety of Michael acceptors to form cyclopentane/cyclohexane rings with excellent stereochemical control, generating only one of the eight possible diastereomers.
