UV-activated alkyne-alkene [2+2] cycloaddition has served as an important tool to access cyclobutenes. Although broadly adopted, the limitations with UV light as an energy source prompted us to explore an alternative method. Here we report alkyne-alkene [2+2] cycloaddition based on visible light photocatalysis allowing the synthesis of diverse cyclobutenes and 1,3-dienes via inter- and intramolecular reactions. Extensive mechanistic studies suggest that the localized spin densities at sp(2) carbons of alkenes account for the productive sensitization of alkenes despite their similar triplet levels of alkenes and alkynes. Moreover, the efficient formation of 1,3-dienes via tandem triplet activation of the resulting cyclobutenes is observed when intramolecular enyne cycloaddition is performed, which may serve as a complementary means to the Ru(II)-catalyzed enyne metathesis. In addition, the utility of the [2+2] cycloaddition has been demonstrated by several synthetic transformations including synthesis of various extended pi-systems.

The development of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysed intercepted dehomologation of aldoses is reported. The unique selectivity of NHCs for aldehydes is exploited in the complex context of reducing sugars. Examples of strong substrate governance for either intercepted dehomologation or a subsequent redox-lactonisation were identified and mechanistically understood. More importantly, it was shown that catalyst design allowed the tuning of the selectivity of the reaction with structurally unbiased starting materials towards either of the two scenarios.

The regioselective hydroboration of aliphatic internal alkenes remains a great challenge. Reported herein is an iridium-catalyzed hydroboration of aliphatic internal alkenes, providing distal-borylated products in good to excellent yields with high regioselectivity (up to 99:1). We also demonstrate that the C-B bond of the distal-borylated product can be readily converted into other functional groups. DFT calculations indicate that the reaction proceeds through an unexpected Ir-III/Ir-V cycle.

A series of 1,3,5-triazine analogues, incorporating aminobenzene sulfonamide, aminoalcohol/ phenol, piperazine, chalcone, or stilbene structural motifs, were evaluated as potential antioxidants. The compounds were prepared by using step-by-step nucleophilic substitution of chlorine atoms in starting 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine. Reactions were catalyzed by Cu(I)-supported on a weakly acidic resin. The radical scavenging activity was determined in terms of %inhibition activity and EC50, using the ABTS method. Trolox and ascorbic acid (ASA) were used as standards. In the lowest concentration 1 X 10(-4) M, the %inhibition activity values at 0 min were comparable with both standards at least for 10 compounds. After 60 min, compounds 5, 6, 13, and 25 showed nearly twice %inhibition (73.44-87.09%) in comparison with the standards (Trolox = 41.49%; ASA = 31.07%). Values of EC50 at 60 min (17.16-27.78 mu M) were 5 times lower for compounds 5, 6, 13, and 25 than EC50 of both standards (trolox = 178.33 mu M; ASA = 147.47 mu M). Values of EC50 correlated with %inhibition activity. Based on these results, the presented 1,3,5-triazine analogues have a high potential in the treatment of illnesses caused or related to oxidative stress.

Hf-MOF-808 exhibits excellent activity and specific selectivity on the hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds via a hydrogen transfer strategy. Its superior activity than other Hf-MOFs is attributed to its poor crystallinity, defects and large specific surface area, thereby containing more Lewis acid-base sites which promote this reaction. Density functional theory (DFT) computations are performed to explore the catalytic mechanism. The results indicate that alcohol and ketone fill the defects of Hf-MOF to form a six-membered ring transition state (TS) complex, in which Hf as the center of Lewis stearic acid coordinates with the oxygen of the substrate molecule, thus effectively promoting hydrogen transfer process. Other reactive groups, such as ?NO2, C = C, -CN, of inadequate hardness or large steric hindrance are difficult to coordinate with Hf, thus weakening their catalytic effect, which explains the specific selectivity Hf-MOF-808 for reducing the carbonyl group.

A palladium(II)-catalyzed 1,1-difunctionalization of unactivated terminal and internal alkenes via addition of two nucleophiles was developed using a cationic palladium(II) complex. The palladacycle generated in situ as a result of a regioselective addition of a nucleophile to the alkene can readily undergo regioselective beta-hydride elimination and migratory insertion with a cationic palladium catalyst. The resulting eta(3)-pi-allyl palladium(II) complex is the key intermediate that reacts with a second nucleophile to furnish the desired 1,1-difunctionalization of the alkene. Under the optimized reaction conditions, a wide range of indoles and anilines add to alkene units of 3-butenoic or 4-pentenoic acid derivatives to afford the synthetically useful gamma,gamma- or delta,delta-difunctionalized products with excellent regiocontrol. Furthermore, by employing internal hydroxyl or acid groups and external carbon nucleophiles, this transformation enables unsymmetric 1,1-difunctionalization to forge challenging and important oxo quaternary carbon centers. Combining experiments and DFT calculations on the mechanism of the reaction is investigated in detail.
