Three iridium(III) complexes (Ir(4tfmpq)(2)mND, Ir(4tfmpq())2mmND, and Ir(4tfmpq)2mpND) with the 4-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)quinazoline (4tfmpq) main ligand and 1,5-naphthyridin-4-ol derivatives (mND: 8-methy1-1,5-naphthyridin-4-ol, mmND: 2,8-dimethy1-1,5-naphthyridin-4-ol, mpND: 8-methy1-2-pheny1-1,5-naphth-yridin-4-ol) as ancillary ligands were studied. Polymeric carbon nitride materials have been used in numerous light-to-energy conversion applications ranging from photocatalysis to optoelectronics. For a new application and modelling, we first refined the crystal structure of potassium poly(heptazine imide) (K-PHI)-a benchmark carbon nitride material in photocatalysis-by means of X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Using the crystal structure of K-PHI, periodic DFT calculations were performed to calculate the density-of-states (DOS) and localize intra band states (IBS). IBS were found to be responsible for the enhanced K-PHI absorption in the near IR region, to serve as electron traps, and to be useful in energy transfer reactions. Once excited with visible light, carbon nitrides, in addition to the direct recombination, can also undergo singlet-triplet intersystem crossing. We utilized the K-PHI centered triplet excited states to trigger a cascade of energy transfer reactions and, in turn, to sensitize, for example, singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) as a starting point to synthesis up to 25 different N-rich heterocycles.

In an attempt to synthesise new tyrosinase inhibitors, we designed and synthesised a series of chalcone-hydroxypyridinone hybrids as potential tyrosinase inhibitors adopting strategic modifications of kojic acid. All the newly synthesised compounds were characterised by NMR and mass spectrometry. Initial screening of the target compounds demonstrated that compounds1a,1d, and1nhad relatively strong inhibitory activities against tyrosinase monophenolase, with IC(50)values of 3.07 +/- 0.85, 2.25 +/- 0.8 and 2.75 +/- 1.19 mu M, respectively. The inhibitory activity against monophenolase was 6- to 8-fold higher than that of kojic acid. Compounds1a,1d, and1nalso showed inhibition of diphenolase, with IC(50)values of 17.05 +/- 0.07, 11.70 +/- 0.03 and 19.3 +/- 0.28 mu M, respectively. The inhibition kinetics of diphenolase indicates that compounds1aand1dinduce reversible inhibition on tyrosinase. Finally, we found that copper coordination should be one of the important inhibitory mechanism of these compounds in tyrosinase.

Astragalus mongholicus (MG) and Astragalus membranaceus (MJ), both generally known as Huangqi in China, are two perennial herbals widely used in variety diseases. However, there were still some differences in the chemical ingredients between MG and MJ. In this paper, metabolomics combined with the ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS/MS) was employed to contrastively analyze the chemical constituents between MG and MJ. As a result, principal component analysis showed that MG and MJ were separated clearly. A total of 53 chemical markers were successfully identified for the discrimination of MG and MJ. Of them, the contents of 36 components including Astragaloside IIII, Astragaloside IV, Agroastragaloside I, etc. in MJ were significantly higher than those in MG. On the contrary, the contents of 17 other components including coumaric acid, formononetin, sophoricoside, etc. in MG were obviously higher than those in MJ. The results showed that the distinctive constituents in MG and MJ were remarkable, and MJ may own stronger pharmacological activities than MG. In a word, MG and MJ may be treated as two different herbs. This paper demonstrated that metabolomics was a vitally credible technology to rapidly screen the characteristic chemical composition of traditional Chinese medicine.

Axially chiral anilide compounds are an emerging but scarcely investigated class of stereogenic molecules with potential applications as biologically active scaffolds. Because of the lower rotation barriers, the synthesis of these compounds is a challenging task. Furthermore, the status of the limited structure type of chiral anilide constrains the latent capacity of the C-N axis as a chiral source in the application of asymmetric synthesis. Herein, we disclose an efficient protocol for the construction of the rationally designed axially chiral phosphamides via atroposelective N-allylic alkylation reaction of MBH carbonates and phosphamides. The simple hydroquinidine catalyst proves to be most efficient in this artroposelective strategy, delivering the desired axially chiral phosphamides in good yields and high enantioselectivities. In addition, a phosphamide compound, which contains both P-stereogenic center and C-N axial chirality, can be obtained by this method through a kinetic resolution process. Because of the large steric diaryl phosphoryl group, the synthesized axially chiral anilide has a large rotational barrier. As a demonstration, current studied axially chiral ortho-iodine substituted phosphamides could act as efficient chiral hypervalent iodine(III) catalysts for the asymmetric oxidative dearomatization of phenols. Moreover, a speculative model, which can explain the enantiocontrol, was proposed based on the experimental observation and theoretical calculation.
