The (Fmes)BH2 center dot SMe2 reagent (7) reacts sequentially with an acetylene and, e.g., xylylisonitrile in a convenient three-component reaction to give a series of unprecedented dihydro-1,3-azaborole derivatives 16. The tolane-derived example 16a was deprotonated and used as a ligand in organometallic chemistry. Compounds 16 served as the starting materials for the straightforward synthesis of various dihydro-1,3-azaborinine derivatives by treatment with an isonitrile. Several diaryldihydro-1,3 azaboroles showed interesting photophysical properties such as aggregation-induced emission and high fluorescence quantum yields.

Strawberry is one of the most popular fruits because of its sensorial and functional properties. However, strawberry crop is sensitive to salt stress conditions. Despite plants have plasticity, high salt concentrations induce molecular, biochemical, and physiological responses in plants. There is evidence that the abscisic acid (ABA) hormone acts as a signaling molecule under stress conditions; however, the molecular mechanisms involved in the synthesis and homeostasis of ABA and in the induction of phytochemical antioxidant compounds under stress conditions remain unclear. In this study, the effect of stress induced by NaCl (salt stress – SS), with or without the simultaneous application of ABA, on the ABA, phenylpropanoids and L-ascorbic acid (AsA) metabolisms were evaluated. The physiological aspects (Na, Cl and proline concentration, photosynthetic variables) were also studied. The results showed that salt stress increases the Na and Cl content in the leaves, affects photosynthetic variables and triggers the production of proline, pelargonidin-3-O-glucoside, total phenolic compounds and AsA content, alongside the upregulation of several genes from the phenylpropanoid and flavonoid pathways. These effects were accompanied by the induction of compounds and transcripts related to ABA biosynthesis, conjugation and catabolism. Otherwise, the exogenous application of ABA in salt stressed plants promotes a shift in gene expression and metabolism to mitigate the stress. Therefore, salt stress affects the metabolism of ABA, phenylpropanoids and AsA in strawberry increasing phytochemical composition which is strongly associated with an ABA-dependent mechanism.

We report the highly enantioselective synthesis of P-chiral tertiary phosphine oxides featuring an ethynyl group via Cu(i)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition. Newly developed chiral pyridinebisoxazolines (PYBOX) bearing a bulky C4 shielding group play an important role in achieving excellent enantioselectivity while suppressing side bis-triazoles formation in desymmetrizing prochiral diethynylphosphine oxides. Notably, by tuning the size of the C4 shielding group, it is possible to achieve excellent remote enantiofacial control in desymmetrizing phosphole oxide-diynes with the prochiral P-center farther from the ethynyl group by four covalent bonds. Time-dependent enantioselectivity is observed for these desymmetric CuAAC reactions, suggesting a synergic combination of a desymmetrization and a kinetic resolution, and our ligands prove to be better than unmodified PYBOX in both steps. This finding contributes to a highly enantioselective kinetic resolution of racemic ethynylphosphine oxides. The resulting chiral ethynylphosphine oxides are versatile P-chiral synthons, which can undergo a number of diversifying reactions to enrich structural diversity.

A redox-active iminoquinone motif connected with pi-delocalized pyrene core has been reported that can perform efficient two-electron oxidation of a class of substrates. The design of the molecule was inspired by the organic redox cofactor topaquinone (TPQ), which executes amine oxidation in the enzyme, copper amine oxidase. Easy oxidation of both primary and secondary alcohols happened in the presence of catalytic KOtBu, which could reduce the ligand backbone to its iminosemiquinonate form under photoinduced conditions. Moreover, this easy oxidation of alcohols under aerobic condition could be elegantly extended to multi-component, one-pot coupling for the synthesis of quinoline and pyrimidine. This organocatalytic approach is very mild (70 degrees C, 8 h) compared to a multitude of transition-metal catalysts that have been used to prepare these heterocycles. A detailed mechanistic study proves the intermediacy of the iminosemiquinonate-type radical and a critical hydrogen atom transfer step to be involved in the dehydrogenation reaction.

Recently, an interrupted carbonyl-olefin metathesis reaction has been reported that results in tetrahydrofluorenes via a distinct fragmentation of the reactive intermediate. We herein report the development of an analogous transformation interrupting the carbonyl-alkyne metathesis reaction path resulting in dihydrofluorene products relying on Lewis acidic superelectrophiles as active catalytic species.

A variety of pyrimidinyl benzothiazine carboxamides were prepared from benzothiazine carboxylate and 4,6-diaryl/heteroarylpyrimidinyl-2-amines. The compounds having 4-nitro phenyl, 4-pyridinyl and pyrazolyl – pyrimidinyl benzothiazine carboxamide moieties 6 e, 6 i, 6 j, 6 k and 6 m displayed prominent antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis. Further, compounds having pyrrolyl, pyrazolyl, pyridinyl and indolyl units 6 f, 6 k, 6 m and 6 n displayed prominent antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger. On the other hand, compounds with electron donating substituents on the aromatic ring (6 b, 6 c) and those with furan moiety (6 g, 6 h and 6 l) displayed very good free radical scavenging activity greater than Ascorbic acid.

A series of novel chalcone derivatives containing a thiophene sulfonate group were designed and synthesized. The structures of all title compounds were determined by H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR and HRMS. Antibacterial bioassays indicated that, compound 2l demonstrated excellent antibacterial activities against Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (Xac), with an EC50 value of 11.4 mu g mL(-1), which is significantly superior to those of bismerthiazol (BT) (51.6 mu g mL(-1)) and thiodiazole-copper (TC) (94.7 mu g mL(-1)). Meanwhile, the mechanism of action of compound 2l was confirmed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, compound 2e showed remarkable inactivation activity against Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), with an EC50 value of 44.3 mu g mL(-1), which was superior to that of ningnanmycin (120.6 mu g mL(-1)). Microscale thermophoresis (MST) also showed that the binding of compounds 2e and 2h to Tobacco mosaic virus coat protein (TMV-CP) yielded K-d values of 0.270 and 0.301 mu mol L-1, which are better than that of ningnanmycin (0.596 mu mol L-1). At the same time, molecular docking studies for 2e and 2h with TMV-CP (PDB code: ; 1EI7) showed that the compound was embedded well in the pocket between the two subunits of TMV-CP in each case. These results suggested that chalcone derivatives containing a thiophene sulfonate group may be considered as activators in the design of antibacterial and antiviral agents.

Based on the DFT calculations, the sulfonamide was explored as an efficient hydrogen-atom transfer catalyst for the C(sp(3))-H alkylation. The combination of a metal-free photoredox catalyst and a sulfonamide catalyst enables highly regioselective alkylation of the C-H bonds adjacent to heteroatoms, which features broad substrate scope and excellent functional group compatibility. Remarkably, the sulfonamide catalyst was also applicable to the C(sp(3))-C(sp(3)) couplings through the merger of photoredox, nickel, and HAT catalysis.
